Onfray oppose, à plusieurs reprises, la Science à la méthode de Freud qui n’est pas scientifique, certes, et dont une critique radicale et moqueuse a été avancée par Wittgenstein aux années quarante ; il ne dit pas, cependant, que la science n’est monolithique, quant à sa méthode : il y a une approche classique, cartésienne, quand une théorie, une fois proposée, est ensuite vérifiable par expérimentation : Thus runs the physics, chemistry ... science called natural.
Alongside this scientific method pure and safe, Onfray poses a theory which is a little different, that of Darwin and it proceeds in another way: Non axioms where does all the building, it contains many observations and covers generalizing an idea, a hypothesis satisfactory compared with observed facts of Darwin's theory seems convincing but beware! it can not be formally verified by experiment.
Indeed, physics is so long remained an example of science verifiable by experiment, we now offers concepts and assumptions, and impressive as the "Big Bang". This assumption, untested and probably forever unverifiable, however, came in culture under a scientific assumption to prove and it works like a possible truth: our world view takes into account, it influences our psyche and in fact is a myth - but alive, "founded", "reasonable and rational" as "Moses" in the past and encore de nos jours pour la multitude des croyants. Nous vivons dans cette mythologie actuelle, réelle, fonctionnelle… scientifique.
L’opposition « science – mythe » qui est l’un des leitmotivs du livre, en réalité n’est pas absolue. Car nous vivons avec des connaissances qui ne sont scientifiques qu’en partie… Nos théories scientifiques prennent leur place, énorme mais limitée, dans une vision du monde qui veut qui se veut étanche contre toute inquiétude de ne pas savoir ou de ne pas prévoir : si la science n’a pas dit son mot sur quelque chose de vital, la poésie, l’horoscope ou ma grande mère le diront.
A theory must be complete and not contradictory with respect to the phenomena it describes, it must be economical and beautiful. In practice, to settle in contemporary science and culture as well, it creates a "mass", a weight and is accompanied by a kind of tax strategy, and it prepares a "place" in consciousness the reader and it infuses his conviction, his logical arrangement of arguments.
Onfray is often convincing. His book itself is also a symptom of wilt classical Freudianism though it persists because nothing disappears in humanity which is a living organism and renewing itself, and at the same time ... his own museum.
Parts of Freudian myth are tasty and effectively dismantled in the book of Onfray. Five cases of psychoanalysis, whose "Wolf Man," the President Schreber etc.. These early chapters of the textbook Freudian, are, according Onfray, false, which will be built, however, a gigantic slot machine " psychoanalysis ... Personally, I have read and I thought that Freud recommended the use of cocaine as an anesthetic for eye surgery, and that's it. Onfray reveals that in Freud's article "On the cocaine" (1885), it is the use of this drug to treat hysteria and also addiction to other drugs! This article is not included in the complete works of Freud, it never refers to him in the theses. However, there had been a victim of the ideas advocated in the article, a morphine addict, Fleiscle-Marxow friend of Freud, who died after being treated by injections of cocaine.
Freud's approach was not scientific but could it be? The area of the psyche is enormous, life man (sleeping, and more ...) so mysterious. It was already a lot of questions about the nature of dreams, and despite the scorn of the dominant culture, a Catholic who followed the prohibition of paying attention to dreams (and this in spite of great importance given to dreams in the Gospels). The intuition of Freud, the Talmud - as to its sensitivity to hidden things, his taste for interpretation - has made "his level" and "his story" to the human soul (recall the tripartite soul the apostle Paul ...) the freeing of a platform and mechanical dependence "moral responsibility + action =".
Onfray does not see, it seems, the value of this release: he denounces the humanization of a drift made by Freud and psychoanalysis in general - as the relativization of "normal" standard is engulfed by the modern psyche, a vast and unpredictable finally understood through psychoanalysis, therefore, always forgivable. True, but on the other hand, the current public does not go on Sunday afternoon in psychiatric hospitals for fun oddities the unfortunate sick - this distraction still normal in the eighteenth century, with its legal firm, we seem aberrant XXI, with our moral relativism and the like. Onfray wants a world more real, "he said, softer, flatter, we add more comprehensible and more teachable.
The massive attack against Freudianism Onfray is positive and purifying several aspects: it demonstrates the Freudian claim to repel religions, Christianity and Judaism, to install his doctrine in their place, which many prophetic revelation and himself, a founder inspired a gourou. Ni l’un ni l’autre ne peuvent cependant entrer dans le « vif de la religion » et saisir la connaissance particulière d’un croyant… Cette dernière sera donc déclarée inexistante, fruit d’une névrose, par Freud, privée de toute objectivité ; Onfray le suit dans cette approche ; il sera obligé de Freud fight, to get some space ... Hampered by the breadth and ambiguity of the Freudian atheism, Onfray and seeks, in part, found weaknesses in the master ... the most fun, of course, is an implicit accusation of Onfray on a lack of potency in Freud!

It is also important that Moses is replaced in this event only, by Aaron, father of children and owner of a tribal chief of staff.
Onfray points out the archaic attitude, say, Catholic Freud to onanism, including that of childhood and adolescence, he mocks his recommendations to combat this "morbid impulse" with cold water introduced through a catheter. The irony of the criticism sometimes gives the benefit of a deep compassion toward the sick Freud's cancer and dying in exile in London. At this point we understand that Onfray's book is also a knife (maybe a flint ...), with which the philosopher finally cut the umbilical cord that bound him ... even to the mother (spiritual ...) called Freud and ... Freudianism. Personally, I would read as a victim of communism and Russian, with great pleasure the story of a Breakup "liberation" by Michel Onfray, with that of Marxism .... Alas! The philosopher speaks as a private thing (of interest ...) However, it should remind the French that Freudianism was banned in the USSR, almost all psychoanalysts were arrested by the KGB (our Russian Gestapo) and disappeared in the Gulag.
